How do I know if I have lead water pipes?

  • Check the age of your property. If it was built before 1930 then they are more likely to have lead pipes, as lead was a common material used for plumbing at that time. If your property was built between 1930-1980 they may have a mix of lead pipes, especially in older sections of the property.

  • Lead pipes are usually a dull grey colour, not shiny like copper pipes. If the pipe appears grey or slightly dull and doesn’t shine like brass or copper, it could be lead.

  • Lead pipes are often joined with lead solder, which is soft and malleable. If you see joints with a squishy, greyish, or thick layer of solder, this could be a sign that lead is involved in the pipework.

  • If you're still unsure give Tweed Valley Water Services a call and we can inspect your water system for you
